What is 3D printing? 

3D printing is relatively new technology that allows you to create physical model from a digital 3D model that was made in 3D software such as Rhinoceros. The origins of 3D printing started back in 1980’s as ‘rapid prototyping’ since the purpose of this technology was to be faster and cheaper than anything else in that time. However, nowadays this technology has found many different use case scenarios and the possibilities are nearly endless.

How does 3D printing work? 

There are several 3D printing technologies, some of them are:

Fused deposition modeling (FDM)
Stereolithography (SLA)
Digital Light Processing(DLP)
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
Selective laser melting (SLM)
Laminated object manufacturing (LOM)
Digital Beam Melting (EBM)

Most of them are based on creating very thin layers of material that are stacked on top of each other. There are different types of building material but one material that is mostly used is plastic filaments. This plastic is fed into the printer, then melted in the printer and then extruded onto the 3D printer surface. The process can be seen here:

Rhino 3D printing  

When it comes to Rhino 3D printing, architects are able to use existing features within Rhino to prepare 3D models for printing. One of the most important elements of preparation is making the model watertight. This means that the all geometry should be completely sealed with now holes in it.

A great command that can help you with analyzing the geometry is called ‘Show Edges’. Another one that can help you fix the mesh is called ‘Mesh Repair’. With these tools, Rhino 3D printing allows you to export a model as .STL file which is needed for 3D printers.
