Seashore Chapel: Transforming Vector Architects' Vision in Rhino

Rhino is one of the most powerful 3D modeling tools for architects and designers. With its robust set of modeling features, architects can bring their designs to life. In this post, we will look at how to model the stunning Seashore Chapel designed by Vector Architects using Rhino.

Overview of the Seashore Chapel

The Seashore Chapel is located in Beidaihe, China right by the sea. With its beautiful wooden facade and sloped roof, the chapel blends in harmoniously with the seaside location.

The chapel features a unique asymmetric design with angled walls and slanted roofs. The roofs extend outwards on one side to cover the entrance patio. Inside, the chapel has a simple layout with an altar on one end and benches filling up the main space.

Modeling Process in Rhino

To model the Seashore Chapel, we will use the floor plan and section views provided for the chapel.

First, we import the 2D drawings into Rhino and scale them correctly using the dimensions given. After positioning the different views, we can start tracing outlines to create the main forms.

The side elevation outlines are traced first to create the exterior walls. The different heights and slopes are created by extruding surfaces to match the drawings. Next, the section-cut lines are traced to make the interior walls and openings like the doorway.

The stairs are modeled by duplicating and trimming the outlines from the section view. Columns and other details like railings are added based on the elevation views. The wooden cladding on the exterior facade can be created with Rhino's texture mapping.

Tips and Tricks

Here are some useful tips to follow when modeling the Seashore Chapel in Rhino:

  • Use the floor plan and section views as guides for tracing outlines. Lock them in place as references.
  • Change layers as you model different sections like walls, stairs, etc. This keeps things organized.
  • Use commands like Extrude, Boolean split/difference and Scale 1D to create the forms quickly.
  • Add details like railings, benches, and textures once the major shapes are done.
  • Model one section at a time referring to the different views as needed.

Recreating Real-World Projects in Rhino

Rhino provides immense flexibility for architects to recreate and experiment with real-world designs like the Seashore Chapel. The accurate modeling helps visualize the spaces and test out variations.

Some key advantages of using Rhino for such architectural modeling include:

  • Powerful tools for generating and modifying complex geometry
  • Ability to import and scale 2D drawings for modeling
  • Vast array of commands suited for architecture projects
  • Rendering capabilities to create photorealistic visualizations
  • Excellent interoperability with other software like Grasshopper

Final Thoughts

Recreating existing designs is a great way to learn and improve your skills with Rhino's modeling tools. The Seashore Chapel provides an interesting asymmetric shape to model within Rhino.
